4AM is the new 6AM

“Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you”.

– Walt Whitman

I recently started to shift my circadian rhythm from night owl into early riser. Now I manage to consistently wake up at 4AM–which I admit really extremely hard to do, but it allow me to create really useful space for myself to plan the day.

If you are one of those person that would like to try to wake up early, then these is some things that I learn can be useful to make me able to wake early in the next day:

  1. You need more than 2 alarm. I setup 5 alarm differently at 3.55, 4.00, 4.03, 4.05, 4.07. Even when I start to wake up at 4.00, I found sometimes my self lying in the sofa, try to close my eyes again, and right just before I drift away, that 2 minutes margin would save me.
  2. Sleep before 11pm. This one is obvious. Different person has different sleep requirement. I found myself function well with 6-7 hours sleep. That means I need to sleep before 11pm.
  3. Visualize. While you close your eyes, imagine yourself wake up tomorrow at 4AM, feel fresh and as strong as mountain, ready to kick the day. This would help brain to prepare the morning.
  4. Drink water first.
